Tous les haplogroupes d'ADNmt apparus hors d'Afrique descendent, soit de l'haplogroupe M, soit de l'haplogroupe N[11]. L'haplogroupe M est relativement récent, puisque son dernier ancêtre commun est postérieur à certains sous-clades de l'haplogroupe N, comme l'haplogroupe R[12].
